Everything you need to know about the cleansers

Hey Guys! I bring to you another post where I am going to tell you everything you need to know about the cleansers. A complete guide on what’s the purpose of the cleansers, and what you should pick basis your skin type.

While writing about this post, I wanted to review the Fab India facial cleanser which I have been using lately. So let’s begin..

Why do we need Cleansers?

Cleansers are the very first step to your skincare routine. We all know very well that our skin is in constant contact with dust, pollution, bacteria, germs. These problems if not removed time and again, will cause trouble to your skin.

This is why we need cleansers. They help in removing these problems, thereby letting your skin breathe and ensuring that it comes back to its natural state. By cleansing you are removing the likelihood of your skin getting blocked and infected.

What cleansers should I pick?

With the variety available in the market, I am sure you would be confused. But let me simplify it for you.

Basically you need to understand your skin type in order to pick the right facial cleanser. There are four types of skin – dry, normal, combination and oily.

What your skin type is depends on what is the texture of your skin after washing your face. Does it feel dry, itchy or flaky sometimes? If yes, then you have dry skin type. Is your skin breaking out from excess oil on your face? Then probably you have oily skin.

After understanding your skin type, the next step is to understand the types of cleansers.

So there are basically four types of cleanser textures – gel, lotion, cream and oil. Now which one suits you? Find out now –

Gel and Lotion based cleansers –
  • They are light on the skin
  • Suitable for oily and combination skin type
Cream and Oil based cleansers –
  • They are heavier on the skin
  • Suitable for people with dry and sensitive skin

There are different packaging for different cleansers. They are available in tubes, pot, pump and bottles. Packaging depends on the texture of the cleanser. For example, cream or oil based cleansers are most likely to be found in pump or pot packaging. Gel and lotion based cleansers are most likely to come in tube or bottles. However there is no hard and fast rule around it.

Nowadays there are multi-purpose cleansers available in the market. There would be cleansers that exfoliate the skin or some that brightens the skin.

My recommendation is to use simple cleansers made from natural products, isn’t full of chemicals and does one job what it is suppose to do i.e. CLEANSING.

With additional ingredients and multi-purpose cleansers comes lot of chemicals. This in turn will imbalance the pH level of your skin that isn’t healthy.

Therefore, it is highly crucial for you to understand which cleansers you should put your hands on.

Could cleansers break you out?

Yes there are cleansers that might break you out. There are primarily two reasons for a cleanser to break you out –

  1. Your cleanser is full of chemicals and it is imbalancing the pH level of the skin which is destroying the acid mantle. Now if you don’t understand these terms, make sure to check out my post on “Do we really need toners in our skincare routine”. There I talk about the pH level and it’s importance in protecting our skin
  2. You are not using the cleanser as per your skin type. This doesn’t mean that having an oily skin means use cleansers that is stripping away the moisture completely. It means that we must use a cleanser that restores the natural oils of our skin by removing excess oils

My suggestion is to first understand your skin type and then pick the cleanser. You can also choose to go for more natural products.

My recommendation on facial cleansers

I have used many cleansers, from drugstores to high-end and I do have favorites. Having an acne prone skin, I generally avoid cleansers that are filled with chemicals. If not then at least they should be paraben and sulphate free.

Such cleansers have proved to be healthier for my skin and doesn’t disturb my pH level. However I still use toners because they make a huge difference to my skin.

One of my favorite cleanser of all times is Forest Essentials Mashobra Honey, Lemon and Rosewater facial cleanser. It comes in 200ml packaging that will cost you around INR 1075.

The product is 100% natural and feels amazing on the skin. I have posted the complete review of this product on Products I recommend from Forest Essentials, so do give it a read.

Having said that, I found Fab India selling their paraben and sulphate free face wash about an year ago. I decided to give it a try and review it for the benefit of larger audience.

Fab India Facial Cleanser (Paraben and Sulphate free) – INR 325 for 100ml

If you ever wished to have a mild facial cleanser, then you got one from Fab India. This brand has variety of facial cleansers but only two that are paraben and sulphate free.

  • Wild Rose Face Wash – for dry to normal skin type
  • Haldi Chandan Face Wash – for oily skin type

I have tried both the types, and both of them are pretty mild on the face. They will not leave your skin feeling dry or patchy. Once I applied it around my eyes too by mistake and was surprised that it didn’t hurt my eyes. I mean really!!

Let’s talk about how pleasant these products smell. Wild rose has a rose fragrance and haldi chandan has a pleasant refreshing chandan fragrance. The fragrance is not overpowering for me.

The ingredient list is lengthy and I have included the picture for everyone’s reference. Good thing about this product is that, it’s paraben and sulphate free.

Texture of the product is a white creamy consistency.Fab India has relaunched their packaging and to be honest I am not a huge fan of that. It is an old white broad tube that has product of quite thinner consistency.

The packaging earlier was better and the product texture was thicker, that means a little goes a long way. It’s basically the same old product but thinner consistency. I end up spilling most of the product while taking one dab out of it. Disappointing it is.

I mean if the consistency of the product gets thinner, don’t you think it should be in a pump bottle instead of a tube. A pump would not waste the product the way it is being wasted in the tube.

Anyways, I hope Fab India does something about their face wash packaging as it seriously needs help.

Pros –
  • Mild facial cleanser that doesn’t irritate skin
  • Paraben and sulphate free
  • Gentle on skin around the eyes too
  • Reasonable for the result it gives
Cons –
  • Poor packaging for the liquid consistency of the product leading to wastage
  • Thinner consistency

All in all, I am happy with the cleanser as it is one face wash with the price of drugstore brands that is mild on my skin. However there are few drawbacks that I have listed.

That’s all for today guys. Make sure you subscribe to get weekly newsletters about my latest posts. You will also get the complimentary guide on the skincare routine which is more than cleansing, toning and moisturizing.
